I don't understand the 'tal y como' clause.

A few months ago for his 'enormous surprise', [something to do with rediscovering himself], Berriff recovered the box from is attic.

tal y como = as, or just as
reconocer can also mean to acknowledge or admit

tal y como reconoce él mismo = as he himself admits
