It's that kind of smell of animal meat and entrails exposed in the marked to be sold.. like chicken and pork... that smell in that dishes badly washed...

As Morbo said, it is avery foul odor or smell. Usually associated with meat, especially decay meat or carcasses. I have heard it used in reference to any kind of strong odor that is so overpowering the it tends to make one "choke" or gag.

I don't know where choquía comes from! But my mother used to say it all the time... maybe comes from any indigenous word since she spoke a kind of ancient Spanish not very usual in these days.

Pour an egg in a glass, them empty it... wait some minutes... smell the glass... and that's choquía smell! (sparkles)
