Translation exercise, Spanish - English, upper beginners/intermediate: Bullying at schools
Please post your translations, the best will be chosen and we will talk about this topic on General Discussions. I am looking for an idiomatic translation, not a word-by-word one
Hint: look up "ser una cruz"
From today's newspaper:

Obesity and clothes: Major causes of bullying
Children's physical appearance: A dividing point ---------for example, good translation, --------in schools
A study by the British Council revealed that in Spain 47% of the students reject anyone who has a different aspect from themselves.
MADRID - Skin color, race, accents, religion and sexual orientation are among the principle causes of many adolescents being victims in high schools all through Europe, of their being bullied by their classmates. But in Spain, that which is least pitied is physical appearance. Students who are overweight and those who are not dressed in the latest fads or fashions are the ones who suffer the most attacks. Specifically, during adolescence, they are discriminated against by almost half of their fellow students.
On the other hand, Spanish students are the most "tolerant" in Europe, after the Dutch, concerning religion: "Only" 11% show discrimination against their classmates.
Heidita, I appreciate the emphasis on the words tolerant and only. I can almost hear their being said in a very semi-sarcastic manner.
The ---sobra------overweight and clothes are the main reasons for bullying.
The physical appearance of children is a burden for schools.---not for schools but for the children
A study by the British Council reveals that in Spain, 47% of schools -----of the children ------rejects those who look different.
Madrid - in schools throughout Europe the colour of skin, race, accent, religion or sexual orientation are among the main reasons that lots of adolescents are victims of the jokes of their classmates. But in Spain, the main victims of bullying are those who look different. Overweight students and those who do not wear fashionable clothes are the most targeted. In particular, almost half of adolescent schoolchildren are discriminated against (for these reasons)
On the other hand Spanish students are the most tolerant in Europe after the Netherlands about religion: only 11 out of 100 disciminate against by their companions.
Blimey that was difficult! I didn't manage to look up ser una cruz, but I'm sure I've heard it used as 'to be a burden'.

An overweight **child--as this is about schools, only refers to children not the adults---------- and his clothes, the main cause of jokes**
The physical appearance of children, a burden in the schools
A study by the British Council reveals that in Spain 47% of schools reject someone who has a perceived different aspect about them.
Madrid - Hair color, race, accent, religion or sexual orientation are among the main factors of many youths becoming victims of the mockery of their companions in colleges-------schools!------ all over Europe. However, in Spain, the true issue that has no pity in the schools is the physical appearance. Schools with overweight students and those who do not wear the most modern-looking clothes suffer with the most attacks.-----not the schools, the children------- It is a fact that, in the adolescent stage, they are discriminated against by almost half their classmates.
On the other hand, the schools of Spain --------not the schools, the pupils--------are the most tolerant in Europe, after the Netherlands, with religion. Only 11 percent discriminate against their classmates in this respect.
Overweight and clothing, the main reasons for mocking
Physical appearance of the children, reason for "crucifiction" in the schools-------well, this is one way of saying it.....
A study by the British Council reveals that in Spain 47% of the students reject the ones with a different appearance
MADRID - The skin colour, the race, the accent, the religion or the sexual orientation are among the main motives because of which many adolescents are victims of the mocking of their fellow students in the schools all over Europe. But in Spain, the thing that really makes them merciless in the schools is the physical appearance. The students that are overweight and do not dress in the latest fashion trends are the ones that suffer most attacks. In particular, in their adolescence, they are discriminated against by nearly half of their classmates.
In return, the Spanish students are the most "tolerant" in Europe, after the Dutch, with the religion issue, only 11% discriminate against their classmates.
Here's my very clunky attempt... I don't think I'm even an intermediate beginner yet so I probably will be way off here!
Being overweight and clothing are the main reasons for bullying. The physical appearance of children [is] a trial in school.--trial, excellent----
A study by the British Council has revealed that, in Spain, 47% of students have rejected -tense--------others who are different [than they are].
MADRID-- The color of one's skin, race, accent, religion, or sexual orientation are the main reasons that many adolescents are victims, in schools across Europe, of the taunts of their companions. But in Spain, students do not have pity on those with a [different] physical appearance. [...ugh, I know I'm missing some words in that sentence, that doesn't make sense! Are they saying, "especially in Spain, students are less likely to have pity on..."] ------no, not really---------- Students who are overweight and those who do not have fashionable clothes are the most likely to suffer attacks. In truth, in the years of adolescence, almost half of them [all students] are discriminated against.
To change, Spanish schools must become more tolerant, like Europe, [especially] like the Netherlands' view on religion: only 11% are discriminated against by their companions.
I put in brackets things that are sort of extra words but seemed to make more sense if included.
La Noticia de Hoy : Being overweight and clothing are principal subjects of mockery
The physical appearance of children, a burden for schools.---not for "in"
A study by the British Council in Spain reveals that 47% of school rejects ------not the schools........those who have a different look.
MADRID-The skin color, race, accent, religion or sexual orientation are among the main reasons why many teenagers are victims, in schools across Europe, from the taunts of his classmates. But in Spain, so really there is no mercy in schools regarding physical appearance. School??? with overweight ???****and those who are not dressed in the fashion that most attacks are suffering. In particular, and in adolescence, are discriminated against for nearly half of his classmates.
In return, the Spanish students are more "tolerant" of Europe after the Netherlands with religion: "only" 11 percent discriminate against their fellow
