how would you say "he was living (in an open field)"?

do you use ser or estar'

I'd go for estar. however my Spanish is flawed. I'd do a work-around saying " el vivia en un campo abierto"

roughly: He lived etc. I'm sure somebody will come along with the correct way soon

I'm thinking it might be "estaba vivir" he used to live.
