I would like to be a member of the loyal opposition on this question.
I fully support the use of despididas in any chat room where interpersonal interaction is live or some say in real time.
If an enquirer/member is "in" or "out" of the forum has never been a concern for me. Whether a frequent (or even infrequent) member is present or not present on the other side of the forum screen from me neither adds nor detracts from my own enjoyment of Span¡shD!ct. Somehow, the forum has never really given off a direct (here & now) interpersonal sensation in anywhere near the same way as live or realtime chat.
Regarding who is online, we are well rid of this feature. You will remember that we were allowed to be online, but, invisible. I was often 'invisible' (because of my great shyness and withdrawn personality). Even if we were aware of the names of those online, the forum is not the place to be in direct contact with others. As I understand things now, using the forum as a chat room is heavily discouraged. It would only clutter question threads with interpersonal comment that were meaningless to 3rd parties and add a layer of bad housekeeping to the forum to encourage or promote chatter of that kind.
I must say, I do not enjoy being a member of the loyal opposition (Bah! Humbug!). I prefer the responsibility of the majority.
Muchos saludos/Best regards,
Moe
You have my vote for this. I have often thought that signing off would be nice and polite, specially if you have left an open question, or requested further input before giving an answer. I second Marianne's request for a "Who's online".
I'll be the dissenting voice. I like the "Recent Activity" stuff. "Who's online" would show people that are signed in but have left their computer. Recent Activity, in contrast, shows folks who are actually doing stuff. Plus it sometimes piques my curiosity. I think "oooh, that flashcard set sounds interesting" and I click the link and off I go.
Pienso "oooh, esas tarjetas flash me parecen interesantes". Hago click en el enlace y ya me voy.
I would definetley appreciate a "whose on line" sort of awareness. It could be done through symbol by the person's avatar of some sort. This is a TERRIBLE example, but myspace has this sort of thing. It tells you whose online and whose not. Could be an asset to the forum... ![]()
If there were a way to see who is/isn't on-line there would be no need for posts to say Hi!/Goodbye!. The utility does not relate, particularly, to the forum but, rather, to effective communication via PMs (although this would also require immediate notification [which we currently lack]).
It would also open the possibility of inviting someone to 'chat'. Personally, I am not a fan of text chat (it seems to me to almost never have anything to do with learning/practicing Spanish/English) but it would also facilitate meeting in the voice chat. Given the frequent comments by members about the lack of opportunities to practice hearing/speaking, I think this would be a good thing.
I agree with the "who is online" feature, but saying goodbye?? it's kind of useless since this forum is full of people from different parts of the world... we don't go to bed at the same time, so we could have one "good night thread" every hour... ![]()
Great idea.
I was hoping that someday we can have a list of who's online...like the chat room has one. Maybe at the right hand of screen where the "recent activity" is shown. We can get rid of the recent activity and replace it with "who's online."
Thanks for participating! but you just have to say bye, see you later, ahí se ven, etc.
This should be split by a moderator. ![]()
We can get rid of the recent activity and replace it with "who's online."
I tried to get that right at the beginning, Marianne and gekko, but ...![]()
I´m afraid I´m thinking that this would be steering away from the question/answers and learning side of the forum and encourage too many personal messages in the threads. Don´t get me wrong it´s nice to have a message in the comment box connected with the thread/post. I would also like to keep the "Recent Activity" column.
Great idea! how about a row of world clocks , then we could sign off using the time relevent to our particular geographic position. OK I am off for dinner it is now 6. 10 pm ,be back on in 2 hours ,hasta luego! ![]()
I have never been in chat rooms and have no desire. This site keeps to business for the most part and is great for learning. I appreciate those who come up with exercises and their efforts. I drop in and out when I can for moments or hours to read and learn from others questions and answers. I don't know anybody, yet some have helped me. I have tried to imput but am limited with Spanish skills and site navigation skills. I don't think it makes any difference if folks knew I was coming or going.....sincerly, Timoteo
Una idea genial, Morbo, gracias por sugerirlo, esto nos hace más amigos a todos y más una comunidad![]()
Why don't we take Morbo up on this splendid idea, in your last post, or example, of the day, why not say good night or good bye? Thanks![]()
Domingo, mayo 16 por la mañana.
I'm leaving home! Bye-bye. It was nice to see you! I'll come back until night.
