My boyfriend speaks fluent spanish. I would like to be able to use some form of endearment other then amor or corazón. I would like to be able to call him the spanish version of "honey." Would mijo be appropriate?

Hi Hedgehog There have been a number of threads on this subject. You may want to make a search for "mijo", just to get a broad sample. As you can see from the answers, different people have different views on this word.

To me, it means two things: If said to a (much) younger person, then it means "son" / "sonny", or "daugher" (mija).

But if you say it to someone of similar age to your, then it's more like "dude", or "sis".

"¿Pero mijo, que haces?" "Dude, what're you doing?"

I agree with everyone preceding me that it wouldn't be my first choice for term of endearment, though.

Not really, it means mi hijo...my son. It is a term of affection but usually used by an older family member like like parent or granparent.

Try mi querido.

The words m'ijo and m'ija comes from mi hijo and mi hija and it's a kind of Mexican slang that you can use if both are very closed and of course both like the word. I don't recommend you using them at least your boyfriend does it first.

What about mi hijo or mi hija to a much younger person who you like as a friend (only a friend, no romantic implication) ?

And what about using mi hermano/hermana to a friend as an endearment? How well would you need to know somebody to say that?

Not in Argentina galsally. You might hear an old person saying "m'ijo" or "m'ija" to a younger person when he/she wants to show affection. - Benz, May 29, 2010

No offense to Mexicans but it seems their Spanish is not the example to follow. Learn from Spanish or Peruvians, it seems they are closer to proper Spanish language.

My friend and I call each other "mija" and "mana" (short for hermana), but then again, we also call each other "mi esposa!" lol But thats only because we've been friends since we were bearly out of diapers and our husbands say that we're each other's "sanchas!"

I think if you have a friend that you're very close to it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't see a problem with it, but you might want to try several diffrent pet names out before choosing one.

I call my husband "mi cielo" or "mi rey" and he LOVES that! He only calls me "mija" when he thinks I'm being immature or he really, really wants me to do something for him (and he thinks being overly mushy will make do it... usually works lol).

The one name I hate with a passion for him to call me is "gordita!" I HATE when he calls me that, but he thinks its sweet and that its cute so I just go with it.

How about amorcito?

I have mostly heard "mijo" (mi hijo) referring to "my son", but I am a beginner and may not be aware that this is an appropriate term to call your boyfriend. L.

That's what he calls me, so I wasn't sure if it was something I could use for both genders. Thanks! - 00d5fd80, Mar 20, 2010
Maybe he is not so fluent :0) - sfrenchie, May 28, 2010

Just to throw another one in there, mine likes "mi cariño" which is equivalent to "my darling".

"Mi cielo" is also a good general go-to phrase.

In fact, "Mi amor, mi vida, mi cielo..." was what my (Mexican) ex and I used with each other when one of us really wanted to get our way... or otherwise express over-the-top-sugary-sweetness tongue rolleye
