So, for this statement

The class was full on Saturday. I use the preterite tense?

El sabado la clase estuvo llena.

Thanks

Estuve = first person, singular, preterite tense

The preterit tense is used when describing something that happened at a particular moment in time.

Estaba = first person, singular, imperfect tense

The imperfect tense is used to describe past events that aren't easily defined as having a definite ending.

Estuve is "I was" in the preterite form.

Estaba is "I was" or "She/he/it was" in the imperfect (copreterite) form.
