Oral transcript and translation of the week (beginners and intermediate)
This is a test to determine the feasibility of doing this exercise on a weekly basis. I wonder if members of this site, after hearing a Spanish audio recording of small extent, can write it in Spanish and then translate it into English.
The best he/she does wins the vote for the best answer. Others can also receive votes for good answers.
Example: Hear the following story ... Los peores aeropuertos del mundo (Worst airports of the world)
Now try to write it in Spanish and then in English ...
Latest News:
I have updated the audio recorded and also a download link has been added in order to offer more possibilities for a better experience...

Hola Carlos:
This was a great idea and very nice of you to do. I am so glad that I have finally gotten the audio fixed on my computer so that this wonderful opportunity that you have given us did not pass me by.

I am waiting for a connection to Santiago. I have a couple of hours ahead of me. That is not the bad news - I have lived and suffered delays infinitely longer - the bad news is that I am in Guarulhos, the airport in São Paulo, and in 30 minutes I have already seen everything which this terminal has to offer. Is Guarulhos the worst airport in the world? I wouldn't dare to say that; I would say that it is one of the most important on the continent if not the most important and that one would expect more from a place which flies airplanes all over the world because to make a long story short, Guarulhos is unbearably boring.
Is the title clearer now?
Hello Carlos: The audio quality is better -- but is still really poor on my system.
- I am only a beginner so with bad audio it is really hard to follow. Normally I consider my listening skills pretty good. Anyway I gave it another try and here is what I came up with.
I expect a connection to Santiago. I have a few hours in front of me. That is not the bad news. There is/are (..?..) ..... you wait infinitely longer.
The bad news is that I am in Guarulhos. The airport of Sau Palo, and in thirty minutes I have already seen everything the terminal has to offer. It is Guarulhos the worst airport in the world. No (...?...?...?...?)
It would be one of the most important in the continent, if not the most important. And one would expect more froma place that (..?..) planes in as much as to a good part of the world. For that, in short, Guarulhos is insufferable (...?...).
Please let me know how I did.
) Entonces, tal vez aquella pudiera ser "Written Translation of the Week..." ¿Qué opinas?
Carlos, I think it's a fabulous idea, and something that I am really looking forward to participating in.
The recording could definitely be better. It played all the way through for me, but it sounds like it was recorded over the telephone? That is my guess. I think you will get better participation if you can make the audio better.
Let me know if I can help.
Wonderful exercise, Carlos, as we talked about this I think it is a great idea.
By the way, the airport is : Guarulhos
Not knowning the word, it is really difficult to understand.
Sobre todo esa hache traicionera intercalada
I would recommend to listen to the slow transcript first, for beginners. More advanced students should try the normal speed first, see what you get
This exercise is meant and was designed for beginners or intermediate students.
Well done Carlos!! I think your idea is an early Christmas present to all English Speakers wanting to learn Spanish. This is truly a brilliant concept and adds another dimension to helping people learn Spanish by listening to a Native Spanish Speaker. I have added your thread to my favourite list and look forward to your next post in the current series. I shall post my attempt at writing the script in Spanish and English tomorrow.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas! Mark.
Great idea Carlos. My sound is a wee bit dodgey but I do like the idea of having the option to play it first slowly and then at normal conversational speed. And the fact that it is "short and sweet" beginners like myself won't feel quite as overwhelmed as we might othewise have done. I might even have a go at a transcript ...later on.....
Annie.
I had some problems hearing but I am not sure if it is a technical problem or I am deaf to the language.
My quick English translation is along the lines of You are waiting for a connectiont to Santiago. ?you have been waiting and hour? There have been no negative announcements but you have to suffer and infinite wait. The bad news is that you are in the terminal of the worst airport in the world in Sao Paulo. One of the most or the most important on the continent. ....in few words it is insuffereable....
You might have created a monster
I am so looking forward to the next exercise! Perhaps we should call this segment - "Carlos' Challenge" ?
¡bien hecho amigo¡
Annie.
Yes, I thought it was pretty difficult. Here is what I got:
I am waiting for a connection to Santiago. I have a couple of hours to wait. That is not the bad news. I have experienced (and suffered) delays infinitely greater than that. The bad news is that I am in Guarulhos, the airport in Sao Paulo, and in thirty minutes I've already seen all this terminal has to offer. Is Guarulhos the worst airport in the world? I won't venture to say so. What I might say is that it's one of the most important airports on the continent, if not the most important, and one would expect more of a place from which aircraft take off to much of the world. For this reason, in a nutshell, Guarulhos is insufferably boring.
Now for what it's worth, here are my thoughts and perceptions on this exercise:
There were many places that I just could not figure out the words being spoken. A big part of that was when words were unfamiliar to me.
Guarulhos is one that I never would have gotten had it not been for Heidita pointing it out. San Paulo similarly threw me.
"un par de horas por delante" is a simple expression, but since I wasn't familiar with the word par, I was trying to come up with something I knew. I eventually had to look it up, and learned a new word that I doubt I will forget.
He vivido y sufrido esperas más largas. I could not have understood this. Once I knew what was being said, I could understand it all except vivido, which always sounded like vilido to me no matter how many times I listened.
ya he visto sounded like guaristo.
I was also thrown by the use of the conditional tense, which I haven't studied at all.
In short, I would not have made it through this exercise if not for having the written text available to refer to when I got stuck. But I think it was invaluable to me in my quest for learning to understand spoken Spanish, and I really hope there will be more of these to come.
Carlos, thank you so very much!
Espero una conecion a Santiago. Tengo un par de horas por delante. Esa no es la mala noticia. He vivido y sufrio esperas infinitamente mas largas.

This is really hard and a bit maddening. I know I messed up the last part. How on Earth could anyone grasp that at normal speed?
This was harder than I expected. Oh, well. Here goes:

The tense is mainly the Conditional Tense, I think. I expected the scene to be set using the imperfect tense - but I guessed wrong lol.
Now, I'm apologising in advance. But here it is - it was quite a challenge for me. I
