Well.... the verb is desear which means to desire and the noun is deseo which means desire. Querer is a synonym to desear although they differ in thier own ways.

Yes "desear" is a bit of a multi-purpose verb that communicates wanting, wishing or desiring.

There's a very thorough definition at the top of this page; just go to the little translation box up at the top and type in "desear" and click the Spanish to English choice and you will get a lengthy explanation.

"Desear" isn't used as much in informal speech as "querer", but you will hear it in retsuarants, stores, and in beginning Spanish classes because it's a cognate for "desire" and is easily remembered!
