Why do you think its important to learn Spanish? This is a loaded question:

  1. Why learn any language other than English when the world is slowly adjusting to the English people and learning their language for trade and travel?
  2. Why Spanish?
  3. What have you used Spanish for?
  4. For you Spanish learning English, I understand why you learn English, but if you want to pipe in, feel free.

English is said to be the (or one of the) hartest languages. Now to answer your questions...

Well, for me, I have always wanted to learn Spanish. I really have no idea why. I guess something just drew me to this language. Since I was a kid, I wanted to learnand I always wanted to go to Mexico, and here I am! smile

Well before I moved here, I worked in a "fast food Mexican restaurant". Kinda like Taco Bell, only we had authentic Mexican food as well. My boss was from Mexico, and very often we got people that spoke nothing of English. So I was able to take their orders.

Now that I live in Mexico I have to use it. I have to go to the store and ask for what I need. I am a really shy person when I comes to talking, so I don't really just chat with people here. I forget everything when I am nervous. At this moment, I couldn't hold a conversation even if I wanted to.

It's true that a lot of people in the world are learning English, but whether or not that's useful depends on what you want to do.

If you're thinking of going to a European country for a vacation, you can probably get by because so many people there speak English.

If you're thinking that everyone in every Spanish speaking country will know English before long, sorry, that's not likely. America is vastly more likely to become a bilingual country than for the rest of the world to learn English. So if you want to interact with a South American country (vacation, business, etc), then speaking Spanish will give you an advantage.

Just going to a country and hoping to find people who speaks English is a lot riskier than making sure you know the language spoken there.

For me, it's always just been a feature of my life. I have no clue why. Ni mi madre ni mis las dos hernanas han hablado espanol, ni tal otra idioma. No one in my family is spanish, that I know of. But since as far back as grade school, it seems I've always been around, speaking in, or listening to spanish. My sisters like to say I must be the mailman's son! LOL! Funny, true story...I remember being in like first grade thinking how strange english is....wink
