How do I say "I love You" to somebody

..my Spanish teacher told us once that you would say "Te amo" to someone you love--your significant other--and that you would say "Te quiero" to a friend.

John, if your love is from somewhere in America, you will do well with "te amo", not often used over here in Spain but THE thing to say there
