Overview

Cardinal numbers are adjectives that answer the question, "How many?" They specify a specific number of a noun.

Cardinal numbers do not change according to gender or number except for uno and ciento. - uno changes to un in front of singular masculine nouns and una in front of singular feminine nouns - ciento becomes plural after 199 (ciento noventa y nueve) and changes according to the gender of the noun (cientos, cientas)

When to Use Cardinal Numbers

1. To Count

• uno, dos, tres, cuatro...

2. To Tell Time

Use the 3rd person plural conjugation of ser to express all times except the first hour

• Son las diez. (It is ten o´clock.)
• Son las tres y media. (It is three thirty.)
• Es la una. (It is one o´clock.)
• Es la una y cuarto. (It is one fifteen.) To express a "quarter," use "cuarto". To express "half," use "media".

3. To Indicate Dates

Use cardinal numbers to indicate the day of the month except for the 1st; this is el primero.

• Hoy es el diecinueve de mayo. (Today is May 19th.)
• El primero de enero es mi cumpleaños. (January 1st is my birthday.)

4. To Inidicate Age

Use the verb tener to express that a person has a certain number of years.

• Yo tengo veintecuatro años. (I am twenty-four years old.)
• Mi hermana tiene treinta y nueve años. (My sister is thirty-nine years old.)

Extra Note

To express decimals in Spanish, use a comma; and to express commas, use a period.

• $1.694,68 (one thousand six hundred ninety-four dollars and sixty eight cents)
• Tenemos 13.000 votos. (We have thirteen thousand votes.)
