A suffix is an affix that is added to the end of a word to create a new word with a different meaning (e.g. philia, ism).
1. (abundant in; used with nouns to form adjectives)
a. -y
El terreno alrededor de la montaña es rocoso.The terrain around the mountain is rocky.
b. -ful
Quitarse un tatuaje es muy doloroso.Removing a tattoo is very painful.
c. -ous
Marcelo es egoísta y avaricioso.Marcelo is selfish and avaricious.
2. (related to the action involved; used with verbs to form adjectives)
a. -y
¡Cuidado! La vereda está resbalosa.Be careful! The sidewalk is slippery.
3. (used to intensify the meaning of the root)
a. -ful
Mis hijos son muy voluntariosos y siempre están dispuestos a ayudar.My children are very wilful and are always willing to help.
4. (used to attenuate the meaning of the root)
a. -ish
La herida comenzó a tomar un color amarilloso.The wound turned yellowish.
5. (designates the minimum valency)
a. -ous
Escribe la fórmula del ácido sulfuroso.Write down the formula of sulfurous acid.
