why is everyone uptight on this site?
what kind of site is this? people play all sorts of weird games but they also correct my sentences and is this a SCHOOL learning site or what? i just have questions i don't need corrections because it doesn't matter please explain

If you want to think of it as an uptight SCHOOL learning site, that's fine. It's a site that promotes learning Spanish and/or English correctly and discourages poor language habits because such habits can confuse beginners. For example, if I were a rank beginner, trying to learn English, I might look at your post above and conclude that in English sentences are not begun with a capital letter and that end punctuation is unnecessary and that run-on sentences are considered correct. I might go on to embarrass myself or sabotage my own employment opportunities by displaying these poor habits.
The vast majority of people on this site are interested in learning a second (or third or fourth) language correctly. We think it matters, so we appreciate it when more advanced learners or native speakers help us by correcting our mistakes. If you don't, it's easy enough to just ignore the corrections. Moderators will almost surely insist that you begin sentences with a capital letter, though.
Great answers, just a few additional points-
If you make the correctors feel like their work is not appreciated, or not desired, they are going to hesitate in correcting those of us who do want corrections. It is not that hard to evaluate the source (at least if they have filled out their profile) and the correction and decide whether to go with it or not. And if you decide you are right you at least had to think about why you believe you were correct.
The game threads are specifically for learning. Do not post on them if you do not want corrections. That is the point of those threads. I personally feel that as a learning site, anything should be up for correction- that is the point. I cannot even see why I would bother to write something in Spanish if I didn’t want corrections, nor can I see why I wouldn’t want to learn from any errors I made, after all that is why I am here-I can write sentences at home on paper if I don’t want anyone else’s input.
I wish we had corrections on some of the games that we don't, but simply the virtue of writing something that everyone will see forces me to put more thought into than if I just wrote it for myself. So it is still possible to learn from them, just from what you have to look up and check yourself.
As to the English corrections I get, yes all I learn is that I screw things up from time to time, but they are important, and I fix them, because our English learners look to what we write to learn from. And if we want to learn Spanish from them we need to reciprocate.
I know it is different for those who know English as a second language and are learning Spanish as a third, but are not specifically working on their English, but it still needs to be correct as a model.

The aim of the forum is to provide a platform for like minded people to come together who have a common aim in mind "to learn spanish and/or english" and they employ different creative modalities and methodologies to help each other learn and playing games is also one of such effective ways to practice the language and learn new vocabulary the fun way ...
We also appreciate each other offering each other valued suggestions and corrections to help each other mitigate our errors and be more efficient and proficient as we move along..
And why are you calling the games "weird" .. that is a slur on the innovative efforts of our members who come up with such games in the interest of all the forum members ... I personally don't participate in any of those games as that way of learning doesn't serve me well but I won't ever use any derogatory words for such games or the people who like playing them .. Every one is different and different people learn differently so just because I personally don't enjoy being a part of such games doesn't mean I will start calling them weird ....
And if someone is trying to correct you it is in your own interest, the corrector is not gaining anything out of it (no money, nothing else) he/she may be suggesting you a correction just so you could improve on you language skills as soon as possible for which I am always grateful and I think so should every one else be (as a fundamental humanistic trait) ... But still if you are not comfortable being corrected you may send a PM to the corrector and request them gently not to correct you anymore ..

This is a site for learning and practicing Spanish and English. It is not a school, per se, but in order to help us all improve our language skills corrections and advice are provided by other members.
If you are receiving corrections it is probably because they are needed to correctly express the grammar, syntax or vocabulary of the language you are using. You don't need to take the corrections to heart if you don't want to, but they may help others.
For example, in your question you do not use any capitalization.
I don't think that the people on this site are uptight in general.
Everybody has their moods and bad days.
If you correct someone,and you are not an official corrector,do it politely and with tact.
This is primarily a learning site.
I want to answer your first sentence and question. It's the kind of site where a flippant post can receive elegantly written responses that may actually exceed the ability to comprehend of someone who doesn't need corrections and says that they don't matter.
If you read all the responses and took them to heart you have come out all the better. I know I have.

What exactly do you mean by uptight? Who is uptight? Are you saying this simply because people are offering you corrections to your Spanish or English? Almost everyone on this site who desires to make progress in learning a new language welcomes corrections and feedback from native speakers and other more experienced students; after all, this is how we learn isn't it.... we learn from our mistakes?
I have never met anyone who is uptight on this site in 4 1/2 years. The vast majority of people that I have met who regularly use this site are friendly, respectful , courtoous, and willing to help each other! The few nasty ones I have encountered on rare occasions don't stay long,..usually because the mods (moderators) kick them off the site/ban them for being abusive.
Those who are sincerely committed to learning a language, persevere!
We are a learning or educational site designed to promote high (very good) standards both in English and Spanish which means, as a community, we share in carrying out that responsibility and offer corrections to each other. When we come across mistakes or poorly written English or Spanish we need to correct ithem otherwise beginners or new members are likely to copy the poor examples and this could result in embarrassment, losing friends, a bad interview and failing to gain a new job etc ....We would not be helping people if we just ignored their mistakes but we should always offer them in a friendly, and constructive manner with the desire (motive) to help them and never in a patronising or destructive way to make them feel stupid /small!
Finally, we are here to help each other!

I would reflect the question back to you.
- Why do you ask a question like this when you joined the site (SD) a full year ago? You could have done flashcards or taken the video Spanish courses that Paralee instructs, but you haven't. You could read what SD says about itself, but I guess you haven't. You could have learned as most of us do- by doing - and you have done some of that - now and then.
You overgeneralize by a country mile when you say everyone is uptight on the sight. I recommend you play "New" Drop one take one - Here's the Link Pon una y toma una . and notice that Ray76 who moderates and the others on the thread are anything but uptight.
There are lot's of things to do on this free site or you could invest yourself and some of your money (it's not a lot) and learn more Spanish on Fluencia. If none of this helps there's hundreds of other sites, YouTube videos and other resources you could try...

I only wish the internet had existed all those years ago when I was trying to learn French at school. If it had, I would have loved a site like this to help me learn. Some folk take modern technology for granted, whereas others remember what it was like only 30 years ago, trying to muddle our way through the language-leaning process with books, cassettes (remember those ?), & occasional very expensive trips abroad.
You want to know what kind of site this is ? Es el maná & I for one appreciate it more than words can convey. Go learn some Spanish, then learn some humility & gratitude.
