Game: Find It & Use It (Common Connection Phrases)

7
votes

This is an attempt to game-ify & revisit a large set of phrases I posted about before.

Here's how to participate:

  1. Click on Newest to find the last used phrase.
  2. Choose the next phrase from the list below.
  3. Post an answer with the phrase number, and two uses of the phrase. One use should be something you find on the internet from a native writer. One should be your own use. Post a picture if you'd like as well!

It's possible that some of these phrases are not quite correct. If you find a more correct phrase for the english equivalent, please post that and use it.

If we can get through all of the phrases, hopefully this will be something that we can add to the SD reference section!

Number 3 spelling should be "interesante" - rac1, Jul 25, 2013
Fixed! - wbyoung, Jul 31, 2013
Hola qué buenas frases para repasar. Para número 2 en vez de “de paso” ¿querías decir “dicho sea de paso”–otra manera de decir “by the way”? - bettytf, Aug 15, 2013
Thanks, bettytf, I added that. - wbyoung, Aug 15, 2013

I'll tackle the first one…

#1

The correct phrase seems to be se me occurred in present tense and se me ocurrío in past tense. It seems to be used most frequently with a negative construction.

No se me ocurre peor idea para llevar 100.000 euros que un maletín transparente. (source: twitter)
I can't think of a worse idea than to bring 100,000 euros in a transparent suitcase.

Se me ocurre que no podremos completar esta lista.
It occurs to me that we might not be able to complete this list.

You have a lot of good expressions here. Very useful. Good work!

I think that I can help you by correcting the spanish phrases (while I learn their equivalent in English).

My problem is that I am not sure of getting the whole (accurate) meaning of the English translation. So I will write my guess in parenthesis when in doubt.

Number 3. un cuento is synonym of [fairy]tale. A more neutral translation would be just historia. Also anécdota, in a context of a reunion with family or friends, for example.

Number 10. últimamente. If última has accent, so does últimamente.

Number 16. si eso es cierto.

Number 17. no sé exactamente. Verb "saber", to know.

Number 24. eso no es un gran problema

Number 25. eso es una cuestión de opinión. (I suppose the word 'that' is not used here as a connector).

Number 31. si no me equivoco. Without accent. Un equívoco (with accent) is a sustantive and means misunderstanding.

Number 34. It's tengo mi propia opinión al respecto, feminin.

Number 35. I would use no soy tan experto instead of tal. Meaning: 'my level of expertise is not so high'. Or simply "no soy un experto", if it means 'I do not know a lot of that but,..'.

Number 48. decirlo de otra manera. Because it is 'say it.

Number 54. Can also be "eso suena como". Same reason as number 25.

Number 61. "As a matter of fact..." = "De hecho.."

Number 72. Actualmente is not valid here. Actualmente means nowadays, these days.

Number 94. I would say.. "claro, ¿por qué no?"

Number 96. Also "no te enfades, pero"

Number 99. I think "siento que" is better than "lo siento que".

I hope this will be useful.
