Some animals have different nouns for males and females of the species, while some have to use macho and hembra.

Perro refers to a male dog or one of unknown sex, while perra refers to a ****.

Pardon me. The editor doesn't like the word b*tch for a female dog.

The easiest way to discover the gender of any noun is to look it up in the dictionary.

perro

Perro is a masculine word and it means Dog.

There's a feminine version of it by replacing the O with A , but it's not used a lot because it can also be used as an insult , look here Dictionary.

It's not accurate, you can always use perra for a female pet. of course it´s rude to use it refering to a person. - LuisCache, Feb 2, 2011

El perro, la perra.

Like most nouns in Spanish, most animal names in Spanish have gender. Masculine is usually formed with a final o, whereas femenine is usually formed with a final a:

El gato, la gata.

El oso, la osa.

El león, la leona.

Some animal names are different according to the gender:

El toro, la vaca.

El caballo, la yegua.

El gallo, la gallina.

And yet some other names are equal for both genders:

El hipopótamo macho, el hipopótamo hembra.

El cocodrilo macho, el cocodrilo hembra.
