The foot: el pie (Spanish for the: el if noun is masculine, la if noun is feminine)

Could you explain more about when pie is feminine?

If you look in our dictionary under foot is says a person's foot (pie) is masculine. For the foot of an animal or furniture you use pata; not pie.

If you look under pie it also says that pie is a masculine noun.

the R A E dicionary says pie is a masculine noun and it can also be used for an animal's foot or for parts of furniture.

In what context is it used as a feminine noun?

Oops! after re-reading your reply I think that you were just explaining concordance of definite and indefinite articles to him and not applying them to pie. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Hi Nomad,

First, you might want to edit the title of your post to reflect your question. (It's a site rule, and trust me, the site administrators are sticklers! I've learned from experience.)

As far as your question: el pie means "the foot," and is a masculine noun. Here's how it works:

The foot: el pie (Spanish for the: el if noun is masculine, la if noun is feminine) A foot: un pie (Spanish for a/an: un if noun is masculine, una if noun is feminine) My foot: mi pie (Spanish for my: mi for masculine and feminine alike) His foot: su pie (Spanish for his and her: su)

You need to know that these would all change if you were saying the plural of foot:

The feet: los pies (las for feminine nouns.) Some feet: unos pies (unas for feminine nouns.) My feet: mis pies (mis for both masculine and feminine) His feet: sus pies (sus for both masculine and feminine)

I hope I didn't make this sound complicated...that's just how it works! Feel free to ask for any clarification.
