1 (después de comer) sitting on after a meal
estar de sobremesa to sit round the table after lunch/dinner; conversación de sobremesa table talk; charla de sobremesa after-dinner speech; orador de sobremesa after-dinner speaker; programa de sobremesa (TV) afternoon programme; un cigarro de sobremesa an after-lunch/dinner cigar; hablaremos de eso en la sobremesa we'll talk about that after lunch/dinner
After the main meal of the day, which usually takes place at around 2 or 3 p.m., the Spanish have traditionally lingered on at table drinking coffee and either chatting or watching TV before returning to work later in the afternoon. If they have more time, they may even have a liqueur or play cards. While estar de sobremesa is also occasionally applied to the period after the evening meal, it is more usually taken to mean after lunch, and the sobremesa time band used in TV programme listings applies only to between 2.00 and 5.00 p.m.
