Usage note
In English, "shall" is classified as an auxiliary verb to indicate the future tense of a verb that comes after it. In Spanish, the future tense is expressed by an inflection of the verb.

An auxiliary verb, or helper verb, is a conjugated verb that comes before a main verb and determines the main verb's tense, mood, or aspect (e.g. I have gone.).
1. (in statements about the future)

This refers to an idiomatic word or phrase for which there is no word-for-word translation.

We shall see what happens.Veremos lo qué pasa.
2. (making suggestions)

This refers to an idiomatic word or phrase for which there is no word-for-word translation.

3. (emphatic)

En el inglés hablado, y en el escrito en estilo coloquial, el verbo shall se contrae de manera que I/you/he etc shall se transforman en I'll/you'll/he'll etc. La forma negativa shall not se transforma en shan't.
1. (with first person) (expressing intentions, promises, predictions)
  • I shall be there if I can si puedo, estaré allí
  • I shan't say this more than once esto no lo voy a repetir
  • we shall take note of your comments tendremos en cuenta tus comentarios
  • as we shall see como veremos
2. (Formal) (with 2nd and 3rd person) (expressing determination)

3. (making suggestions, offers)

  • shall I make some coffee? ¿preparo café?
4. (indicating rule)
  • all members shall be entitled to vote todos los socios tendrán derecho al voto
