En la fábrica, tienen una máquina afiladora que usan antes de empaquetar las tijeras y los cuchillos.In the factory, they have a sharpening machine which they use before packing the scissors and the knives.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
2. (occupation)
a. knife-grinder
Mi abuela solía llevar los cuchillos al afilador cada dos semanas.My grandmother used to take the knives to the knife-grinder every two weeks.
A masculine noun is used with masculine articles and adjectives (e.g. el hombre guapo, el sol amarillo).
3. (tool)
a. sharpener
Cada alumno tiene que comprar su propio afilador para sus lápices.Each student has to buy a sharpener for his or her pencils.
