c. arrested
Los adolescentes detenidos no sabían que tenían el derecho de llamar a un abogado.The arrested teenagers didn't know they were entitled to call a lawyer.
3. (at a standstill)
a. held up
El tráfico llevaba detenido una hora debido a las obras.The traffic was held up for an hour because of roadwork.
This means that the noun can be masculine or feminine, depending on the gender of person it refers to (e.g. el doctor, la doctora).
4. (person held in custody)
a. person under arrest
Los tres detenidos pasaron la noche en una celda.The three people under arrest spent the night in a cell.
b. detainee (especially for political reasons)
El detenido se negó a hablar sin la presencia de su abogado.The detainee refused to say anything without his attorney being present.
c. prisoner (person already convicted)
El detenido fue puesto en libertad tras un segundo juicio.The prisioner was released after a second trial.
