AUTONOMÍA The Spanish Constitution of 1978 approved the reorganization of Spain into autonomous regions corresponding to traditional geographical and/or cultural divisions. Each region has devolved authority in defined areas, exercised by an elected assembly. Regions with a strong sense of distinct identity such as Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country (which each have their own language) have extended these devolved powers and now have control over their own education, health, police and public services (and certain tax-raising powers). Other regions, however, still retain the initial more limited powers.
