A suffix is an affix that is added to the end of a word to create a new word with a different meaning (e.g. philia, ism).
1. (characterized by; used with nouns and verbs to form adjectives and nouns)
a. -ed
¡Esperen! Creo que el terreno delante nuestro está minado.Wait! I think the field ahead is mined.
b. -ate
Alina es una persona muy considerada, que siempre trata de no molestar a nadie.Alina is a very considerate person, always trying to not inconvenience anybody.
c. -y
Fuimos afortunados y compramos los últimos dos boletos para la obra.We were lucky and could buy the last two tickets to the play.
2. (resembling; used with nouns to form adjectives)
a. -y
Acaricié su piel aterciopelada.I caressed her velvety skin.
b. -ly
Este mármol tiene un color nacarado.This marble has a pearly color.
c. -like
El vino tiene un sabor avinagrado.The wine has a vinegar-like taste.
3. (act of; used with verbs to form nouns)
a. -ing
El trazado se hace con una regla.The tracing is done with a ruler.
4. (position)
a. -cy
El papado de Urbano VII duró apenas 13 días.The papacy of Urban VII lasted only 13 days.
b. -ate
Durante mi rectorado se implementaron muchos cambios en la escuela.Many changes were implemented in the school during my rectorate.
5. (group)
a. body (noun)
La mitad del alumnado es bilingüe.Half of the student body is bilingual.
b. system (noun)
Esta fue la primera ciudad del país que tuvo alcantarillado.This was the first city in the country to have a sewage system.
