A and Al

In these lessons, you learn the preposition a(to) and the contraction al(to the).

Meet Al

English has quite a lot of contractions (short forms of a word or group of words made by leaving out a sound or letter), such as can’t, we’ll, you’d, they’re, and you’ve. Spanish, however, has only two, al and del(from the)! For now, let's concentrate on al.

How A + El Becomes Al

When the preposition a(to) comes before the definite article el, it combines with it to form a contraction.

a + el = al

Keep in mind that when a is used before the definite article la, it does not contract.
