If you really mean to ask about a class and not the class, substitute una for la.

Interesante. En mi rincón de México, "alumno" es algo consistentemente utilizado para los adultos. Y la definición en el DRAE menciona "escuela, colegio o universidad" y da el ejemplo "alumno de medicina". Estas variaciones regionales son torturas. - jtaniel, Aug 30, 2017

Not in Spain.

Alumnos is a general term for student or pupil .

Whether you are going to an evening adult class , whether it is a school class, a university class...your question would always be:

¿Cuántos alumnos sois en clase/en el aula?

¿Cuántos alumnos hay en clase/en tu clase?

Estudiantes is used when we are talking about university students in general.

Hay huelga de estudiantes.

En esta universidad los estudiantes deben llevar uniforme.
