Hello Tenille,

Welcome to our Spanishdict community forum smile

You asked:

How do I say " Did you sleep last night" in spanish?

To start with, in Spanish you never translate the English word do it is redundant in all other languages, too...you simply translate the sentences: You slept last night?

I will give you two examples using the verbs: comer= to eat and reír= to laugh.

You need to look for the verb comer, choose the tú (familiar form) conjugation of the verb in the simple past (preterite) Do the same for the verb reír which is also an ir verb like dormir, so the verb endings are the same!:

1.¿Comiste pescado anoche? = Did you eat fish last night? (Literally: You ate fish last night?

2.¿Reíste anoche? = Did you laugh last night? (Literally: You laughed last night?)

Now that you know the idea, try to do the last one yourself ...you already know the word for last night! wink I have shown you the way!

3.¿ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ? = Did you sleep last night? (Literally: You slept last night?

Look for the preterite (simple past) of the verb dormir in the familiar tú form (second person singular) write it in the first space then add the word meaning last night which I have provided then you have your answer! wink

I hope this helps you! smile

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favor smile ,

For simple sentences like this you can use the translator here (click on the big SpanishDict logo at the top of any page on SD to get to the translator) or you can use Google Translate.

That's really all you need to know to be able to answer your question for yourself. Below the line I will provide you with some additional information, but it may be more than you really want to know, so ignore it if you wish. smile

=======================================================

In the English sentence "you" can mean one person or several people. A further complexity in Spanish is that there are several forms of "you" :

Informal you - tú
Formal you singular - usted
Informal you - plural - in Spain - vosotros
Formal you - plural - in Spain - ustedes
Informal and formal you - plural - outside of Spain - ustedes

So since there are four different subject pronouns - tú, usted, vosotros and ustedes - there are four slightly different ways of saying anything involving "you" in Spanish.

¿Dormiste anoche? (tú form)
¿Durmió anoche? (usted form)
¿Dormisteis anoche? (Spain, multiple you)
¿Durmieron anoche? (Latin America / U.S. multiple you)

The bolded version is the most common. You would use this to address a single person who you know well (first name basis).
