pelar ( peh-LAHR )

(verb) to peel, to shell

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Siempre y cuando cocino camarrones para la cena, tengo que pelarlos, porque a mi esposa no le gusta poder visualizar una conexión entre su comida y un animal vivo. Recuerdo una vez cuando estábamos en México- le sirvieron un plato adornado con las cabezas de camarrones. Por días después mi esposa preguntaba sobre cada cosa en el menú- ¿hay cabezas en este plato? y el mesero le respondía- No, no hay ojos.

Every time I cook shrimp for dinner, I have to peel them, because my wife does not like to be able to visualize a connection between her food and a living animal. I remember once when we were in Mexico- they served her a plate decorated with shrimp heads. For days afterward my wife would ask about everything on the menu- are there heads in this dish? and the waiter would respond- no there are no eyes.

That's priceless Bosque. My wife, similarly, has a long list of things she won't eat based on one past experience :) - jellonz, Jul 14, 2017
New Orleans is noted for their seafood industry. Once I sent a few pounds of fresh shrimp to someone and when I asked her latere if she enjoyed them, she said she had to throw them out. She said they were bad. I asked her why she thought that and she said - rac1, Jul 14, 2017
"Well, they weren't pink like they are suppose to be." Doh! - rac1, Jul 14, 2017
Typo: "later" - rac1, Jul 14, 2017
I tell my wife all the time, if the shrimp aren't gray, I can't cook them. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 14, 2017
My wife won't eat the trout I catch because of the same reason ;-)! - Jraider, Jul 14, 2017

"Every Which Way But Loose" was the English title Porcu. I've no idea how that became "Duro de pelar" but it seems it did :) In Mexico it was "Pendenciero rebelde" - "Rowdy rebel." - jellonz, Jul 14, 2017

Bananas can be, easily, peeled by hand. Los plátanos se pueden, fácilmente, pelar con la mano.

"Pelar" es un verbo extraño en inglés porque "peel" y "shell" insinúan que la piel o la cáscara se pone en lugar de se quita.

"Peel" and "shell" are strange verbs in English because they imply that the peel or shell is being put on instead of taken off.

I would like to share a regional use of the word "pelar': I hope it's ok It was fun going to the casino, but they took all my money (they left me with empty pockets). Fué divertido ir al casino, pero me pelaron (me quitaron toda la plata -el dinero-o me dejaron con los bolsillos pelados -vacíos-)

Similarly in English Coffee, we have "fleece" as in remove all the wool from a sheep, and remove all the money from someone. "Skin" can be used in the same way. Also "skint" is an adjective meaning having no money. - jellonz, Jul 14, 2017

Cuando ves a un hombre en una playa en OZ cuya piel está lista para pelar, probablamente él es inglés pero no necesariiamente así.

When you see a man on a beach in OZ whose skin is ready to peel , then probably he is English, but not necessarily so.
