picar ( pee-KAHR )

(verb) to sting; to chop

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Me picó una medusa en la playa.

Sometimes I cry in the kitchen, it's not because I'm sad, it's because I'm chopping onions. Algunas veces lloro en la cocina, no es porque estoy triste, es porque estoy picando cebollas.

A veces cuando un amigo está un poco corajudo le preguntamos, "¿Qué mosca te ha picado?"

At times when a friend is a little grumpy we ask him, "What's bugging you?"

Después de tomar un poco demasiado pasarse con la bebida, se acostó en el parque y soñó con algo que no dejaría dejaba de picarlo. Pero luego se despertó y se dio cuenta de por qué tuvo el sueño.

After having a little too much, he laid down in the park and dreamed about something that would not stop pecking him. But later he woke up and realized why he had the dream.

Los moscas del caballo tábanos no pican, le muerden con sus mandíbulas diminutas. El resultado es muy doloroso y picazón.

Horseflies do not sting, they bite you with their tiny jaws. The result is very painful and itchy.

Si pides una salsa que pica, cuídate o te vas a enchilar.

If you order a hot salsa, be careful or your mouth is going to burn, your eyes are going to water and smoke is going to come out of your ears.

(I took some creative liberties with this English translation but that's the image I've always gotten from the word "enchilar")enter image description here

Hay que picar cebollas bajo el agua para evitar ojos llorosos .

Eso es un oxímoron.

You need to chop onions under water to avoid watery eyes .
