sombrilla ( sohm-BREE-yah )

noun ( parasol; umbrella )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Compré una sombrilla para cubrirme del sol en la playa.

I bought a parasol to protect myself from the sun at the beach.

2: ¡Ay, no! Dejé la sombrilla en casa y ya empezó a llover.

Oh no! I left my umbrella at home and it just started to rain.

Las sombrillas más famosas están contenidas en el cuadro Una Tarde de Domingo en la Isla de La Grande Jatte por Georges Seurat. Este cuadro está ubicado muy cerca de mí casa, en El Instituto del Arte en Chicago.

Japan is the only country in the world that uses the parasol on sunny days. Japón es el único país del mundo que utilice la sombrilla en los días soleados.

In this photo, a geisha and a mask-wearing woman walks on a street in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto. En esta foto, una geisha y una mujer con mascarilla caminan en una calle en Kyoto en la capital antigua de Japón.

Funny fact about the mask. From a Western perspective we tend to think of them as being worn to protect the wearer, but in Japanese culture they are often worn when the wearer has a cold in order to protect others :) - jellonz, Jun 30, 2017
Really? I read an article that they wore them due to air polution. - rac1, Jun 30, 2017
In Japan, people wear mask due to allergy, they want to protect their skin from the sun & they don't want to soil or leave a stain on materials they are working on. - NKM1974, Jun 30, 2017
In China, they wear masks due to (PM 2.5) particulate matter 2.5. - NKM1974, Jun 30, 2017
this is true, I was in Maderia diving and a japanese woman was wearing a mask...her husband explained: she has a very bad cold, she doesn't want anybody to be infected. - 006595c6, Jun 30, 2017

I liked to get wet and doesn't want the umbrella, when I was young. I still remember the rain dance after bonking the class. My childhood friends said many girls joined that time when I attracted with my dance folk y Nepali.

Me gustaba mucho se mojar y no queria la sombrilla cuando era joven. Me recuerdo hasta ahora el baile lluvia despues dejar el calse. Mis amigos de infancia decian que muchas mujeres vienen conmigo en ese tiempo cuando atraedo con mi baile folclore y Nepali.

As Ray and Ian suggest, you might want to check the English definitions of "bonk" Nepal. Although, given your following sentence, I'm not 100% convinced you haven't used it correctly :) - jellonz, Jun 30, 2017
Now now jellonz , I could hardly keep myself from laughing like a drain , but as you infer it could mean something different than what we are thinking . honni soit qui mal y pense . - ray76, Jun 30, 2017

En lo trópico prefiero usar una sombrilla cuando está lloviendo, porque hace demasiado caliente calor para un impermeable, la lluvia no dura mucho tiempo y el sol vuelve.

In the tropics I prefer to use an umbrella when it is raining, because it is too hot for a raincoat , the rain does not last long and the sun returns.

Bajo el paraguas de la UE todos nos mojamos; Debajo de su sombrilla a todos nos da una insolación

Under the umbrella of the EU we all get wet and under its parasol we all get sunstroke.

Cuando hay demasiado lluvia, uso un paraguas.

Cuando hay demasiado sol algunas personas usan sombrilla. Es curioso. Sombrilla se llama "parasol" en inglés.

When there is too much rain I use an umbrella.

When there is too much sun, some people use a parasol.

(You will notice that the parasol is not capable of keeping out water. It is even more funny that the word "parasol " could actually be a Spanish word meaning "Sun stopper.)

Umbrella.

Es muy importante utilizar sombrilla para el cochechito del bebé porque sin la sombrilla el pobre bebé pueda padecer de insolación.

It is very important to use a parasol for the baby stroller because without the umbrella the poor baby can suffer from sunstroke.

Lo odio cuando la gente deja su sombrilla etc en la playa e irse a comer durante horas, especialmente durante los meses de verano cuando las playas están hasta los topes.

I hate it when people leave their parasols etc on the beach and go to eat for ages; especially during the summer months when the beaches are packed.

With correction:

Lo odio cuando la gente deja su sombrilla etc en la playa y se van a comer durante horas, especialmente durante los meses de verano cuando las playas están hasta los topes.

paraguas
