How does "de fondo" translate please.

Please can someone tell me how "de fondo" translates. I keep coming across the word "fondo", and when I look up the meaning, (funds, background, bottom), it doesn't make sense in context. The latest sentence I am stuck on is "..... corre 10 km en 30 minutos, lo que convierte en un corredor de fondo", which I take to translate as " ... he runs 10 km in 30 minutes which makes him a ........ runner".

Thanks very much.

De nada. The 1. that became that way automatically was actually definition #14. It is not top of the list. :) - bosquederoble, Jun 18, 2017
