I am having a really hard time understanding direct object pronouns for my homework. Here is what I filled in. Let me know what's right and wrong.

Hi, tue93059, can I call you "t" for short?

You need to do several things.

(1) First read my teaching article on "An out of the box approach to direct and indirect object pronouns."

(2) After studying that, make an attempt to answer your own question, by filling in the blanks yourself. You can do this by editing your original question.

(3) Submit it for our correction. After reading my lesson on this subject you should have no trouble dealing with your assignment.

An Out of the Box Approach to Direct and Indirect Objects

Editing -answering questions.

Here are the sentences: El profesor de español nos(us) ayuda a mi amiga y a mí en su oficina y nosotras _(le)(this is OK)___ decimos «gracias por la ayuda, profesor».

Cuando no comprendo algo en clase, yo (le___ pregunto al profesor y él siempre __me responde. (I ask him, and he answers me.) (Try using a little more logic on these and they will be easier.)

Luis, ¿ te(to you)_ escribe comentarios el profesor en tus exámenes cuando los corrige? Muchos estudiantes dicen que este profesor les (to them)__ escribe comentarios muy interesantes en sus exámenes y tareas.

Cuando estamos en clase, el profesor de español siempre nos muestra los videos de Amigos sin Fronteras y nos___ hace preguntas. ¡Son unos videos muy divertidos! When we're in class the Spanish teacher always shows us videos from Amigos sin fronteras and asks us questions. They are some really enjoyable videos.

Daniela has answered your question beautifully.

I would add the following.

  1. I have assumed English is your first language. In many English speaking countries the emphasis on grammar is not as good as in Spanish speaking countries. Although many verb tenses and sentence structures are different in Spanish it does help your learning if you understand terms like direct and indirect objects adjectives and adverbs etc. If you take your learning to a higher level your teacher will start using the Spanish words for those terms. I took many years break before going back to language learning and ended up buying a book 'English Grammar for students of Spanish' by Emily Spinelli.

  2. Sometimes when doing exercises it is difficult to decide whether two people become we/us or they /them.

  3. Direct object study is followed by indirect object study. It can be confusing. I have no trouble remembering A él, le gusta chocolate - he likes chocolate/chocolate is pleasing to him. In fact, despite your heading your exercise is about indirect objects. I find remembering when it is le and when lo can be tricky which is why I remember the above structure.

  4. In my experience, Spanish sentences are often longer and more complicated than English ones. It is vital to have had a good grounding in direct and indirect objects. It also helps to remember the order is the reverse of English ie not I gave it to him but I to him it gave.

  5. I have answered a similar question before and recommended the straightforward guides on study Spanish.com. However, the site is down for maintenance today.

Good luck. Read Daiela's guide and speak to your teacher if you do not understand.
