Why is the indirect object used here

Question

I've seen in a book this sentence "¡No le pegues a tu hermanito!" (Don't hit your brother!). I would honestly just omit the le. I don't see how this is something TO someone or FOR someone. Is there something else about the indirect object I'm missing and I need to learn about?

You cannot omit le in this sentence, but you can omit if you want "a tu hermano" because this is simply clarification of the required le.

Forget about to and for in English, this is the A used to personalize someone. There would be no A if it were an object, ie: No le pegues el coche.. If you try to justify things in Spanish by referring to English, you will make it more difficult to understand.

I think Minx is implying that the brother is the direct object (which it is), so there shouldn't be a "le" - Zein-, Oct 27, 2016

Yes I was implying that it seems to be a direct object, for now I'm just remember that pegar (to hit) has to be an intransitive verb. - minx14, Dec 21, 2016
