When to use mochila, bolsa, cartera or maleta?

I have come across a lot of different words that mean bag but I was wondering which words I would use for different types of bags. For example, if I want to say my school bag would the term mochila be most accurate? Or if I wanted to say suitcase should I say cartera? Or if I wanted to say handbag is maleta the best translation?

Mexico.

Mochila = backback

Maleta = suitcase

Purse = bolsa

Wallet/Billfold = cartera

But I am sure that there are regional differences in these words.

Have you checked our translator? It's quite good for translating single words.
