Elegir v escoger?
Elegir and escoger both mean "to choose". But are they interchangeable or are there specific modes of use? I do get the feeling that 'escoger' is used more for choosing between objects and elegir is used more for personal feelings but I may be making a mountain out of a molehill here! All help appreciated.

Elegir and Escoger are synonims (they actually have the same meaning: to choose). Maybe you can use one or another but it depends on the specific context and the general use of these words.
Eg.(you'll see the common word in bold, although you can also put the other one):
El pueblo eligió/escogió a su presidente (elections).
La niña escogió/eligió una bola al azar (lottery).
The verbs escoger and elegir both mean "to choose" or "to pick." Although elegir is more common when referring to political elections, there is otherwise very little difference in meaning between them. Although there may be some regional preferences for one verb or the other, most of the time if you can use one verb you also could use the other verb instead (in other words, they're interchangeable).
Some examples of the two verbs in use:
Yo no elegí/escogí nacer en este país. I didn't choose to be born in this country. Vamos a elegir/escoger la segunda opción. We're going to choose the second option. Hemos eligido/escogido la esperanza en lugar del miedo. We have chosen hope instead of fear. Espero que elijas/escojas los colores más adecuados. I hope you pick the most suitable colors. Turistas canadienses eligen/escogen Cuba como destino vacacional. Canadian tourists are choosing Cuba as a vacation destination.
