Corrections anyone?

Corrections anyone?

I just have una preguntita here which has to do with native speakers offering corrections when mistakes in Spanish occur. Pablo is much more into this than I. In fact he is the official corrector in at least one of the games.

I am somewhat reticent in offering corrections, because most of the time people don't come back to see if any corrections have been given, and the post remains the same.

This is not true of everybody. My close SD friends seem to come back at least most of the time and follow through on the corrections. Others don't. Pablo has much more patience with this than I do and consequently sweetly offers more corrections. I get a little impatient and feel that at least in some cases I'm wasting my time.

I don't have any solutions to this problem, I'm just wondering if anybody else does.

(Note: Ray 76 has corrected my English and I have complied. See how easy it is? I couldn't think of a good substitute so I reverted back to Spanish smile)

Hmmm, I think Pablo has chosen not to be the "official" corrector of any threads, he is just very kindly reliable in the absence of anyone else. ;) - bosquederoble, Jan 5, 2016
I think that most of us do get back to do the corrections , but those of us that post a lot often lose sight of all of our posts , sorry about that, we do appreciate all that you do. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
Dearest Dani , i wonder would you mind replacing the word "quickie" for another . Thanks mate. my F Y S . - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
It has an awful connotation here in OZ. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
To He who M U S T be obeyed, I say I have complied. I just couldn't come up with a good English equivalent so I used Spanish. - Daniela2041, Jan 5, 2016
I'd say "quick question" would be pretty close. - Kuwabara, Jan 5, 2016
Yes " quick question" es pefecto mi amigo. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
I thought of that, but it didn't "ring any bells" for me. As the Queen of espanglés on SD. I'll mix Spanish with my English once in a while--just for fun. - Daniela2041, Jan 5, 2016
I appreciate the corrections but like Ray, sometimes I lose track of my posts. - katydew, Jan 5, 2016
Daniela, Ray is "spot on'! He has successfully identified the principal reason that many of us seem to not follow up on the corrections given ....we lose track of them because we are posting so many! This is a reason ...it does not excuse us! I try to . - FELIZ77, Jan 5, 2016
...follow up on them by tracking the recent (new) points I receive I really want to learn from my mistakes and greatly improve my Spanish I always try to thank the corrector especially the Spanish natives;) - FELIZ77, Jan 5, 2016

OK guys, I get it. You are the ones who are always cooperating, so I guess I'm preaching to the choir here, and your singing back to me is sweet and it's bringing many tears to my eyes. I'm having difficulty writing this. I want you to know that I love you all, but I get frustrated at times, that's all. So maybe some good came out of this.

You know, I answer many, many posts NOT for the questioner who ofttimes disappears into oblivion, but I do it for you, as sometimes I read in the comments that someone has been confused about some point of grammar or the other. As I have been blessed by God with a teaching gift of some kind, I am happy to put it to use here, as I do in my college classes.

I hope you will forgive me for my frustration and any other defect that I may have that would make any of you feel bad. I am so happy to be part of this family.

Well, I think anybody who goes back and looks knows that I always go back and fix my posts, and in such a way that people can see what was corrected to what, as I think that is the most helpful in learning. Even though sometimes I do seem to make the same mistake over and over. Well it's possible I have missed one or two, by losing track of them, but not many.

I can't imagine what the point is if you don't learn from your mistakes. Knowing that I will recieve corrections allows me to challenge what I know. The corrections are a huge part of why I write the sentences that I do. On uncorrected threads I tend to write much simpler, shorter things. Still somewhat useful just for the practice, but nowhere near the value of a thread that is corrected.

Some thoughts of things that could help:

The person running the thread holds off voting until corrections are done and only votes for the ones where the corrections are made. Only corrected threads are eligible to be winner (that may already be the case?). These are not my main motivations, but then the corrections are my main motivation, so it doesn't matter in that case.

The corrector has the option of ceasing to offer corrections to those people who don't fix their posts (I would pick this over only offering corrections to those who know they will fix it, so we are not unfair to newbies and occasional users). I personally would quit on anyone who did not say thank you to the corrector- and that thank you is a nice easily seen indication that the corrections have been noted.

I do not know how easy it would be to do these things, as it requires more checking, but these are a couple of thoughts to start with for discussion.

Ok Bosque so why do you offer corrections and answers to newbies that you know statistically will never say thanks or come back ? - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
Because it makes me think about the question, I may get comments that enhance my learning, and truth be told, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. If someone does not respond correctly the first time there is no second time though. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 5, 2016
And yet when i ask for help I wait with baited breath for your erudition and excellent informative and always entertaining answers , but they never come ,I am hurt and dejected if not defective. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
Pythonesque of course mate, You are correct we usually do not give "best answer " until the corrections have been made. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
I once asked someone who taught me a lot what I could do to pay him back- his answer was to simply pass on what he taught me to other people. I think many of us may have struggled a bit on first joining in trying to figure out how things work. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 5, 2016
Ray, your questions are not normally that easy, and often already answered by the time I see them- I tend to retire for the evening about when you are hitting full stride. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 5, 2016
I agree with everything that you say, my aim in life is to help and teach, but, most of these "so called newbies" join and within minutes have brought up an old post , I find that hard to do now even , my point being that they are not as new ,- - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
as you imagine , they know how to navigate SD and what to say to get their homework done. Not all of course , and you are right we must not throw out the baby with the bathwater . "Drown it first" ? Just joking mate. - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
Bosque is indeed one of those who faithfully goes back to his posts to see if there are any corrections, and he fixes any mistakes. Like I said, my close friends most of the time do this. Occasionaly they may miss one. That's normal. Totally ignoring any - Daniela2041, Jan 5, 2016
correction is hard for me tounderstand. I could name every one who does pay attention to my corrections, but I don't want tofill a comment box with names. - Daniela2041, Jan 5, 2016
Dani those of us that are in fear of you never fail to comply with your commands tout suite . - ray76, Jan 5, 2016
There have been times (Ray, you know about this) where I have offered help to a newbie, without "vetting" them and have been repremanded. So I'm sort of paranoid on occasion, and actually hesitate to answer some questions for fear of breaking some rule. - Daniela2041, Jan 5, 2016

I appreciate corrections also and always implement them when they are suggested. I check my posts once or twice for comments then assume that it was written correctly. When the votes stop it becomes forgotten.

But corrections help more than the person they were written for. Many times I have learned from the mistakes of others and the posted correction and I am sure others do too. If someone doesn't correct their own work don't worry because it's their problem. But to not identify and correct an error (not just you but everyone) is to leave an error that someone else might think is correct for the lack of a correction.

Juat realize that even if the correction is not appreciated by the person who posted, it is greatly appreciated by others who read it and learn.

Dani, In case you don't already know it, I always appreciate and want your corrections and I have a way of correcting my posts by crossing though my mistake and writing the correction in italics. The purpose is to not make the same mistake again. If you ever notice that I have not responded to your correction you may message me and I will come back and attend to it.

Please continue to correct Spanish in the posts because many more people learn from it than the original person who posted.

One thing I can't abide is someone with no profile credentials posting answers to questions about Spanish or making corrections. In fact I really only accept corrections from native speakers like yourself from the fluent non-native speakers I accept advice.

First of all allow me to say thank you for all your corrections. You do an amazing job helping everyone with Spanish. We do appreciate you.

If members don't bother to make corrections to their posts from a native speaker, and this includes English, they are not chosen as "best answer". Likewise, they should not be voted up if you see they have not made the corrections offered by native speakers in both languages. This is a rule I go by. If you don't keep track of your own posts and make corrections, why are you here? The sole purpose of SD is to learn a language.

I realize some regular members may forget to make a correction, but that's the thing, always check the threads you have posted on and make the proper corrections before moving on to post anything else. I do mine as soon as I see the corrections and always thank the corrector.

For everyone who takes the time to post on a thread, make a point to check back to see corrections and make them. If you don't, your post can be deleted after a reasonable amount of time. This is the policy I go by and will continue to do so.

As far as new members go, we can't guarantee they will make corrections, but we can make a point of telling them to make sure they correct their posts, but for those of you that have been here for a while, Make your corrections and thank your corrector.

There is no need for anyone to make a new thread regarding this issue. Dani has already started one here, so this is the one you may voice your concerns or ask questions. So, Do Not open another thread or it will be deleted. This way we can keep everything together and refer back to it.

Thank you, Dani for taking the time and putting forth the effort to help all of us here. Kudos! smile Thank all of you for choosing SD. smile

Well said, Rac :) When we tick a box on a thread to say we want to be informed/kept up to date with any new developments, is there an option for these reminders to go straight to our internal PM box at SpanishDict or must they always go to our e-mails? - FELIZ77, Jan 5, 2016

Well mate all you can really do is wait ,and if they do not like or use your suggestions you have two options, leave it be and forget about it or you could wait a little bit for them to respond, but like you said with some people it is kind of a waste of time. But you are very helpful and if they are smart they would like to have someone like you to help them. Hope this helps you mate. smile

I would very much like to thank those natives who are kind enough to correct my efforts. You are the reason I stay on this site and that's the plain truth. I don't care much about the votes or the badges, they are nice and encouraging, but don't really matter. Corrections matter!

And to think people do this for nothing, it is incredible! Thank you Dani, thank you Pablo, thank you Txtaboy, thank you Cruce, to mention most of the current batch of correctors. You are the TOPS.

As for the past ones I owe so much to Cordobesa that thanks are just not enough. As for people not correcting etc. I don't know what can be done, it is up to them. The time-difference sometimes makes it seem as though we're not paying attention, because with us all being in different time-zones, occasionally two days may go by in the other person's time zone before the first person has time to respond, it only takes a busy day, and you might not get back to it until the next evening, after all.

I always try to thank both the official and unofficial native correctors and I do my best to keep track of all my posts so that I can learn from my mistakes, not repeat the same ones, and improve the quality of my Spanish!

I love the Spanish language, like so many other non- native speakers, and so-highly esteem the native Spanish speakers who generously give up their time and work vety hard to kindly correct our mistakes! I try to remember to always check my posts för corrections, and think that I succeed most of the time (90%) but I am sincerely sorry for the times when I fail to do so! :(

There was a time that some of us can still remember when a Spanish native called Heidita (nick-name/apodo)was here and was the principal corrector, that people who did not make their corrections would not be chosen as best post of the day.. this helped to give people än extra incentive to correct their posts ...not that we should really need one, but I guess it helped some people! wink

Finally, like teachers know from teaching real (not cyber world) life classes , there are self-motivated students like many of us here who genuinely want to learn and improve and others who frankly couldn't care less and expect the teachers and others to spoonfeed them the answers so they don't have to put in much effort! We have both types here but the members who stay and contribute the most tend to be those who are genuinely committed to learning either Spanish, English or both!

if Dani would like another member with more ability than I posses , say

Katy Dew ,jubilado or Bosque then they could start a thread on this theme.

I have meant to do a post about this. We need these corrections so much. I tell you right now I will not select a post as a winner if the person has not complied with the Spanish corrections. ( I admit that I am behind on that).

I also think the corrector should be thanked as well. If there are any questions or disagreements with the corrections, it can be settled in a pm. It is OK to ask questions nicely in a comment.

We have seen too many Spanish natives stop correcting because of these situations. They are doing us a great favor and with no real payback to them except our thanks.

So, Dani, please don't stop correcting. I appreciate every one. I do not have a lot of time to be here, so I may miss some corrections. Please let me know by pm if I have done this.

Feliz and Pablo you are fantastic. Please keep correcting.

I appreciate all the help given in the Picture of the day. Thank you so much everyone for your help in Spanish and English.
