I know that both words mean "funny."
But, is it possible to distinguish them from each other with a one-word definition?

It will depend on the region/country. Both really mean the same thing. I know it's frustrating sometimes for there to be multiple words with the same meaning, but it happens, and you just need to figure out what they use more often where you are.
Never let anyone laugh at you for using the uncommon word. Even if it's not the commonly used word, if it's correct, it's correct... and there's nothing to be ashamed of. Of course as you learn the more common words, use them
