There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Se prohibe matar las vacas en el hinduismo, y la mayoría de los hindus no comen carne de res.

Hinduism prohibits the killing of cows, and a majority of Hindus do not eat beef.

2. Las vacas solo tienen un estómago, pero dividido en cuatro secciones.

Cows only have one stomach, but with four compartments.

I wonder what the story is of the cow on the fence. How did the cow get there? Or is it a piece of photoshop work? A mystery that will probably remain unsolved. - Sassette, Jul 26, 2015

Hace unos pocos años solía encontrar con frecuencia estatuas de vacas pintadas y adornadas en los centros de las ciudades que visitaba, pero no he visto ninguna recientemente, y no estoy seguro de que sea porque ya no hay ninguna o porque no he visitado los lugares donde se encuentren.

A few years back I used to find painted and decorated statues of cows frequently in the downtowns of the cities that I was visiting, but I have not seen any recently, and I am not sure if that is because there no longer are any, or because I have not visited the places where they are found.

Érase una vez una vaca que se creía la vaca saltadora mejor del mundo. Puede ser que haya sido una vaca loca; pero una noche , después que las vacas fueron ordeñadas se fue saltando por la pura alegría de vivir y saltó a la luna. Todavía estamos esperando que la vaca vuelva.

Once upon a time there was a cow who believed she was the best bovine jumper in the world. Maybe she was a mad cow, but one night, after the cows had been milked she went jumping and for sheer joi de vivre, she jumped the moon. We're still waiting for the cow to come home.

¡Excellent story Annie! I suggest you these changes: puede ser que haya sido una vaca loca; pero... después que las vacas fueron ordeñadas... y saltó a la luna... :) - crucesignatus, Jul 25, 2015
ordenada and ordeñada have very different meanings so it's important to use the 'ñ' in this case ;) - Pablo064, Jul 25, 2015
Es verdad, también tienes que cambiar la Z en Érase. :) - crucesignatus, Jul 25, 2015

Cruce, in the English rhyme ( this is a play on an old rhyme + the Spanish saying) the cow jumps over the moon, saltar a la luna? - annierats, Jul 26, 2015
I'm nit-picking, is the ' a ' right for over the moon? - annierats, Jul 26, 2015

La ciudad de Sacramento tiene una historia como centro agrícola. Así que a los a quienes que no les gusta la ciudad a veces la llaman una "cowtown" (villa de vaca). ¡Pero de hecho, hay una ciudad muy cercana que realmente se llama Vacaville!

The city of Sacramento has a history as an agricultural center. So those who don´t like the city sometimes call it a "cowtown" (villa de vaca). But in fact, there is a city very nearby that is really called Vacaville!

I think you can omit it if you say things like 'para cuando vengan las vacas flacas' something that clears up the context - Pablo064, Jul 26, 2015

When we were a children and we were in the first year of our basic studies we played "the cow". The game consisted of one of us being the cow and pursuing the others saying moo!

Cuando eramos niños y estábamos en el primer año de nuestros estudios básicos jugábamos a "la vaca". El juego consistía en que uno de nosotros era la vaca y perseguía a los otros ¡mugiendo! LOL

Es extraño cómo estamos en la misma onda. Mi respuesta en la foto del día tiene una anécdota acerca de un burro y una vaca.

It's uncanny how we are on the same wavelength. My answer in the picture of the day has a tale about a burro and a cow.

My entry makes fun of the English idiom "on the fence" which means that one has difficulty making choices.

Adivino que esta vaca no pueda tomar una desición.

I guess this cow can not make a decision.

Me gusta vacas, pero también me gusta comerlas (pobrecitas). En bretaña el gobierno anima a la genre a que coma la carne nativa, pero no estoy seguro porqué. Cuando voy de vaccaciones con frecuencia como carne de Sur América que me parece mucho mas delisiosa. Deseo que se pudiera comprarla aquí, pero si yo la pidiera a mi carnicero, creo que me golpearía con su gran cuchillo...

I like cows, but I also like eating them (poor beasts). In Britain the government encourages people to eat home-grown beef, but I'm not sure why. When I'm on my holidays I often eat South American meat, which I find much more tasty. I wish it were possible to buy it here, but if I were to ask my butcher for it I think he'd hit me with his cleaver...

You hardly ever eat cow, in fact, what you eat is young steer or heifer. It matters a lot if they are out at grass or reared indoors on grain. Better lifestyle for cattle also eqals beter meat! - annierats, Jul 26, 2015

Un pueblo cerca de mi casa se llama "Cowes", como el pueblo en Inglaterra. A menudo voy a un café allí que se llama "Mad Cowes", una broma que se refiere a la enfermedad de las vacas locas que causó tantos problemas en Gran Bretaña hace unos años.

A town near my home is called Cowes, like the town in England. Often I go to a café there called "Mad Cowes", a joke which refers to the Mad Cow Disease which caused so much trouble in Great Britain some years ago.

De niña, hize amigo con una vaca. Todos los días estabamos juntos. Se rasguñaba la cabeza por mi rodillas y yo doblaba las ramas para que el comiera hojas frescas.

As a child, I made friends with a cow.Everyday we were together. She scratched her head by my knees and I bent tree branches so that she ate fresh leaves.
