Think of "gustar" as meaning "to be pleasing to" rather than "to like."

"Yo te gusto" means "I am pleasing to you" ("You like me").

"Me gustas" and "Te me gustas" both mean "You are pleasing to me" ("I like you).

"Me gusta la cerveza" means "Beer is pleasing to me" ("I like beer").

"Me gustan las cosas bonitas" means "Pretty things are pleasing to me" ("I like pretty things").

So, the subject of the "gustar" verb is the thing or person that is pleasing to someone.
