Weekend Subjunctive Practice 5: Hasta que

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 5: Hasta que

15
votes

¡Bienvenido a nuestro hilo! Each weekend, Cordobesa and I will present a different topic on everybody’s favorite subject… the subjunctive!

We will give an explanation of the topic, and a couple of examples.

Write sentences at least 5 words long. Write your Spanish sentence, and include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by Cordobesa in the comments section. Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)

Post pictures if you’d like, and don’t forget to vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the topic as well as the number of votes.

¡Vamos allá!

Weekend Subjunctive Practice 5: Hasta que

Explanation:

Just like after “cuando”, from Weekend Subjunctive Practice 1, when “hasta que” refers to an idea or time in the future, the subjunctive is used when you conjugate the verb that follows.

Examples:

Os espero aquí hasta que lleguéis.

I will wait for you here until you arrive.

Me quedaré en casa hasta que termine la lluvia.

I’ll wait at home until after the rain. (until the rain ends)

¡Os toca a vosotros!

Es un juramento muy bonito : Hasta que la muerte nos separe, pero me temo que hay muchos quienes no lo cumplen

It is a very beautiful oath: until death do us part, but I fear that there are many who do not fulfill it.

"hay muchos que no lo cumplen". Si quieres usar "quien", necesitas el plural "quienes". :) - Cordobesa, Dec 6, 2014

"hasta que lleguemos a España". You can see this sentence with a double negative, too. It doesn't make sense, I know, but for us the meaning is the same "hasta que no lleguemos a España". :) - Cordobesa, Dec 6, 2014
Thank you for that comment Cordobesa, it is one of those things that I am still working on learning. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 7, 2014
Thank you very much Cordobesa. I knew it was wrong a while after I did it. The double negative, though is a tough one. :) - victo, Dec 7, 2014

Voy a situar poner los adornos de Navidad hasta que todo esté colocado en su lugar aunque voy a aguardar mejor tiempo antes de poner los que van afuera, y espero haber acabado de colocar todo antes de que sea hora de guardarlos de nuevo.

I am going to put out all the Christmas decorations until everything is in its place even though I am going to wait for better weather before placing those that go outside, and I hope to have finished putting out everything before it is time to put them all away again.

I love all the decorations. It is and it's going to be beautiful. Please take pictures of the final result. :) - rac1, Dec 7, 2014
Muy bien, Bosque. Solo hay una cosa que suena regular. No sé por qué, pero solemos decir "poner los adornos", no "situar los adornos", a menos que hablemos de "situar algo en un sitio concreto" (y aun así suena más formal). :) - Cordobesa, Dec 7, 2014
Gracias, Cordobesa, me preguntaba sobre eso. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 7, 2014

"tercer"... you need another verb, Bandit... "Hasta que el mundo se acabe, te amaré", for example. :) - Cordobesa, Dec 9, 2014
I think I'll stop with "hasta que" until the next time it comes around! Muchas gracias Bibi! - bandit51jd, Dec 10, 2014
