Dale tigre .

Tigre le .

consígale tigre

I asked for "Get him tiger" as my friend was having a hard time with someone. How do I know which is the correct translation?

"¡Dale, Tigre!" sounds like you're in the Dominican Republic. I have never heard them say, "¡Dale, Tigre!" though. "Tigre" refers to a guy (street smart, macho, and more). - jphip, Oct 10, 2014

Get is just about the most difficult English word to translate (interpret) into Spanish.

It is often part of a phrasal verb in English and phrasal verbs do not exist in Spanish as far as I know.

I know at least 64 phrasal verbs that use "get" as the verb part.

"Get him tiger" is also idiomatic - making it even harder.

Wait for a native Spanish speaker smile

Update.

Get in the SD dictionary.

Hello New Life,

Welcome to the SpanishDict forum. smile

English phrasal verbs can be very difficult/challenging to translate into Spanish as they usually don't translate literally and therefore the context is often the deciding/critical factor in determining how to translate them! By context, I mean, of course, the way in which the word is being used in a given sentence. (or situation)

I would agree with Gringoj and would also suggest: ¡Dale tigre! = Get him tiger!

The Oxford Spanish Dictionary (4th edn) under the word get:

gives hit (target/person) darle a ... to ~ (hit) someone on o in the arm/leg darle a alguien en el brazo/la pierna

Having said all this, it all depends on what exactly you mean when you say: "Get him!" If you simply mean: hit/strike him, the sentence above would probably be fine, but if you meant jump on him, abduct or kill him or do something else, you would need to be more specific. As Ian rightly says, the word 'get' just by itself is notoriously hard to translate as it can mean, among many other things!:

1.get = receive ex: What will you be getting (receiving) for Christmas?

2.get = obtain Police sergant talking to new constable: "You'll need to get a 'search warrant' to enter his house and look through all his stuff!"

3.get = understand I don't get it! = I don't understand it!

4.get = hit /attack eg "Get (attack) him!/her!"

5.get = end up with eg a joke What do you get (end up with) if you cross a a sheep with a sweater?A woolly jumper!

6.get = to catch eg: She got (caught/took) the bus to Kings Cross

7.get = reach eg: Can you get the coffee down for me please...I just can't reach it!

8 Get there = succeed I'm sure you'll get there, if you don't give up!

I hope this helps. smile

Given the choices I would say: ¡Dale, tigre!

But I also am not a native speaker.

We use "dale" to tell a driver of a car to go when it is clear. "dale, dale" as in "go, go" so go get him is not a far stretch.
