The -azo acts as an intensifier. It wasn't just a slap, it was a really hard slap. Knock you off your feet kind of slap.

Well, it doesn't want to let me post in comment, however, rodneyp provided the best answer in this case. As kiwi-girl mentioned cachetear means "to slap" and "una cachetada" is the noun "a slap". Now the as rodneyp described, the "-azo" indicates an intensity such as an "intense slap". Another example would be puño (fist) becomes puñazo when it's a fistful. Hope this guides you in the expansion of vocabulary.
