En el fútbol actual existen tres tipos de marcajes defensivos: la defensa individual o al hombre, la defensa en zona y la mixta.

Por lo general el entrenador no suele tener un marcaje predefinido (aunque se puede dar el caso), sino que lo modifica en función de las cualidades atacantes del rival.
