Hola, STB19:

This is right out of the Panorama workbook that I use in teaching my class.I think you have an older edition because some of the wording is different.

1¿Quieres comprar esta corbata, Gerardo?" "Esta" because she' is holding it in her hand.

2.No, no quiero comprar ésta This time ésta gets an accent mark, because it in now a descriptive pronoun. No noun follows, it means "this one" It's still "ésta" because it's close to him.

3, Prefiero ésa del escaparate. The showcase is just a little distance away. If it were further "aquélla" would be more appropriate. If you think that the escaparate is far enough away, use "aquélla" if you want. Remember the corbata hasn't been trangendered, it's still feminine. It gets the accent because it's another demonstrative pronoun.

4.Again "ésa" or aquélla again according to how far away you think it is.

5 is OK

6.Puedo usar ésa y darle a mi amigo ésta ( the one he has on--demonstrative pronoun.)

7, Y este cinturón?

  1. éste es muy elegante, etc.

I would use éstehere because it's close to him he can touch it. It gets the accent again because it's a demonstrative pronoun.

9.. Again you can use "ésos" or aquéllos depending on your opinion on how far away the cinturones are. Remember these are the demonstrative pronouns they get the accent.

General rules: from your standpoint: este and its variants for closest to you. ese and its variants for something a short distance away. Aquel and its variants are a little like the old English "yonder" and it indicates a further distance from you.

Also remember there is no accent if you have a noun following. "Esta camisa"

In the sentence "No me gusta esta camisa, prifiero ésa." "Esta camisa" means " this shirt." "ésa" means "that (one)"

Some of my kids are having problemas understanding the difference.

I hope this clears up the mud.

Daniela.
