huir ( oo-eer' )

verb ( to flee, to run away )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1.Millones de ciudadanos han huido a países vecinos para escapar la guerra civil.

Millions of citizens have fled to neighboring countries to escape the civil war.

2. Las monjas de mi escuela primaria siempre dijeron que se tiene que huir de la tentación.

The nuns at my elementary school always said you had to flee from temptation.

En algunas situaciones, lo único que puedes hacer es huir.

In some situations, the only thing you can do is flee.

Hay ocasiones en que queremos huir de nuestros problemas, pero tarde o temprano tenemos que enfrentarlos. Es mejor hacerlo cuanto antes. ¿Que tal si la muerte nos sorprende? Esos problemas se heredan.

There are times in our lives when we want to run away from our problems, but sooner or later we have to face them. It is better to do that as soon as we can. What if death surprises us? These problems get passed down.

I'm not very confident about my English. Please help.

Hi Susy...youre English is brilliant. I see just one little thing, 'lives when we want to run away from our problems'.- If you want to use 'that' it would be 'lives that we want to run away from' you would be running away from that particular 'time'. :-) - 0095ca4c, Dec 6, 2013

English help: After "sooner or later", change "que" to "we". - Raja-jani, Dec 6, 2013
Mil gracias, amigos! ♥ - 00e46f15, Dec 6, 2013
It's an interesting point that we use the comparative in English "sooner or later" but in Spanish it's just "soon or late" and you got that in English without even having to think about it (I suppose). Good sentence! - Jubilado, Dec 6, 2013
Only one typo: "que" I think you were writing in Spanglish. jeje - rac1, Dec 6, 2013
Yes, Jubilado! I didn't even think about it. That's a good sign, right? :-) - 00e46f15, Dec 6, 2013

En realidad, algunas veces es mejor huir de los problemas en lugar de afrontarlos.

Sometimes it really is better to flee from problems instad of facing them.

When he saw her coming, he had to flee for his life.

Cuándo la vio viniendo, ha tenido que huir para su vida. (no point in trying to change any of this...it's wearing an anchor and going down down down)

Cuando vió que ella venía, el tuvo que correr por su vida
