la tela ( teh'-lah )

(noun) cloth, fabric

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game to help with using a new vocabulary word! Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Penelope la esposa de Ulises trabajó por veinte años en la tela de su ropa de boda vestido de novia mientras que estaba esperando esperaba su returno el regresso de él.

Penelope, Ulysses' wife, worked on the cloth for her wedding dress for twenty years while she was waiting his return.

enter image description here

Yo estaba totalmente equivocado: De veras en el cuento Odisea Penelope estaba tejiendo un sudario para cuando falleciera el padre de Ulise, Laertes. Necesito leer Odisea. ¡Me desculpen todos, por favor!

I was completely mistaken: In reality in the story "The Odyssey", Penelope was weaving a shroud for when the father of Ulysses would die. I need to read "The Odyssey". Please forgive me everyone!

I think for your sentence, estar. Las velas están hechas con tela de dacrón. But, just saying that they are "made of Dacron cloth": Las velas son de tela de dacrón. - Tosh, Sep 8, 2013
Thanks. There is the nuance again. - gringojrf, Sep 8, 2013
Now I just hope I'm right! :) - Tosh, Sep 8, 2013
Sails are made from other fabrics than dacron but not commonly- I agree with Gringo for "Son: - pacofinkler, Sep 8, 2013
Oops... maybe not! Sorry Gringo, if not. Definitely "son" if "made of"... but I was thinking "están" if you are saying "are made", as in the act of making. - Tosh, Sep 8, 2013
What is dacron cloth? :) - rac1, Sep 8, 2013
Oh Tosh.. I bought your logic hook line and sinker without thinking. So I was right to start with since I wasn't addressing the act of making. - gringojrf, Sep 8, 2013
At least you didn't add any subjunctive to really confuse us! ;) - Tosh, Sep 8, 2013

Recuerdo en los años ochentas que mi hermana y yo acompañabamos a mi mama todos los viernes a la tienda de telas y ella se quedaba viendo los catálogos de los patrones para hacer ropa por horas. Mi hermana y yo nos aburríamos mucho. Yo creo que por eso no me gusta la costura.

I remember that back in the 80's, every Friday, my sister and I would go to the fabric store with my mother. She would browse through the sewing pattern catalogs for hours. I think that is why I don't like sewing at all. Those were some of the most boring times of my life. enter image description here

Please make any corrections.

Normalmente prefiero ponerme telas naturales, pero actualmente algunas de las telas sintéticas son muy buenas.

Usually I prefer to wear natural fabrics, but these days some of the synthetics fabrics are very good.

Una pregunta: Pense que 'actualmente' y 'ultimamente' los dos significan 'lately', o 'nowadays' . Eso es en el diccionario tambien. Quizas es una diferencia regional? - jennysk, Sep 9, 2013
"últimamente" can mean "lately" Jenny :) - ian-hill, Sep 9, 2013
Yes, Jenny. You got it. "Ultimamente" can mean "lately", "in the last few years", etc. - 00e46f15, Sep 10, 2013

"Se requiere mucha tela para cubrir un edificio." - 00e46f15, Sep 8, 2013
I made your correction, sylyon1976. However, the artist Christo is said to "wrap" buildings. http://elpais.com/diario/1994/11/30/agenda/786150003_850215.html - mstivers, Sep 8, 2013
OK, then is "envolver". Without knowing the context it should be "cubrir". :-) - 00e46f15, Sep 8, 2013

Cloth es la palabra más general para traducir tela.

In English fabric is also used but must not be confused with fábrica.
