I have a question about the usage of contigo and conmigo. Is it proper to use them when you are talking about taking along an object? For example:Me voy de vacaciones y voy a llevar mi cámara conmigo. Or is the usage restricted to going with another person?

Yes, it's perfectly correct to use them with objects. "Me voy de vacaciones y voy a llevar mi cámara (de fotos/de video) conmigo" it's a perfect example of that.
