In Spain at least, gata is used to refer to a woman, and gato is a man. It is probably even more specific than that.

Yea, its correct to say : "I love you so much, my cat!" but gato in spanish, in some countries like Uruguay or Argentina, gato is called to a boy who is cute, or if it is for a woman, it's similar like **** jaja But i think this is not an offensive sentence, so, in this case, mi gato, it's only "my cat"
