Thanks Francobollo, Diagonx, a.a.o. for helping us out (whenever they can and want!) with the Spanish, while we are waiting for our new 'official' corrector!

We are looking for an official corrector of the Spanish sentences for this thread, so if you are interested, please send a PM to either rac1 or me.

As there are lots of native English speakers here, most of them can offer suggestions to the English sentences. I shall try to help as much as I can too, of course.

Here are the rules of the game:

  • Use the word in an English sentence and add the Spanish translation of that sentence. Try to use the word in an original way. Use your own words!

  • Vote for the sentences that you like most.

  • Write sentences of at least 5 words, but don't write paragraphs of 4 sentences or more.

  • Correct your sentences according to the suggestions of the corrector.

  • The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

  • Respect the rules of SpanishDict.

  • Enjoy the game and always keep in mind that all of us are here to learn.

Mi frase/my sentence:

I thought I was superfunny when I asked him in my best Spanish: "¿Cómo se llama, llama?", but he spat at me and then said, "I'm an alpaca!"

Creía que era súper graciosa cuando le pregunté en mi mejor español: '¿Como se llama, llama?', pero él me escupió y luego dijo: 'Soy una alpaca!'

The funniest people I know are the ones who can laugh at themselves first.

La gente más cómica que conozco es la que es capaz de burlarse de sí misma primero.

Es muy triste pero cuando me gustaría decir algo muy gracioso todos los chistes se han ido de mi mente. Mi suegra cree que soy una persona seriosa y tímida.

It's sad, but when I would like to say something very funny all the jokes have gone straight out of my head. My mother-in-law thinks I'm a shy and serious person.

In my opinion, jokes are the funniest when shared with friends.

En mi opinión, los chistes son más divertidos cuando se comparten entre amigos.

Here's one for the English students. You'll hear the question from time to time:

"Do you mean funny peculiar or funny ha ha?"

That's because "funny" can mean something strange as well as something that makes you laugh.

Examples"

Peculiar "That's funny, he said he would wait but he seems to have disappeared.

Esto es raro/extraño, dijo que esperaría pero parece que se ha desaparecido.

Funny

The comedian was so funny I laughed until tears ran down my cheeks.

El cómico era tan gracioso, me reí hasta que las lágrimas corrían por mis mejillas.

Este es uno para los estudiantes de inglés. Oirá la pregunta de vez en cuando:

"Do you mean funny peculiar or funny ha ha?"

Eso es porque 'gracioso' puede significar algo extraño o raro, así como algo que te hace reír.

The phrase "funny bone" in English is a pun on the word "humerus" in Latin.

La frase "funny bone" en inglés es un juego de palabras sobre la palabra "humerus" de latín.

No es aconsejable llamar a cierte gente divertida.

It is not wise to call certain people funny.

Cuando era una niña, solía hacer muecas cuando la profesora volvió la espalda a nosotros en el aula.

When I was a little girl, I used to make funny faces at the teacher when she turned her back on us in the classroom.
