As well as wish, desear can also mean 'to want' just like querer. Although not exactly the same they are closely related just like the meanings of the English words; want, wish, & desire.

Besides the eloquent answers already given, desear can also be used as querer (to want) in a polite situation, which is closer to "would like" in English. Examples:
¿Desea probarse el vestido? (Would you like to try on this dress?)
¿Desea una mesa en la terraza o adentro? (Would you like a table out in the terrace or inside?)

Desear means to wish and quierer means to want. So no, they are really not the same.
