Translating Spanish phrases

Question

As a beginning student of the Spanish language, I get frustrated when the supposed meaning of a Spanish phrase seems no where close to it's literal translation, and there are many of those cases for me. An example is "si mal no recuerdo"=as far as I can remember. Any advice other than memorization?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Just browse through lists of idioms and phrases and pick some you like. Read, write, say, repeat and you'll know them when you hear them, and even someday maybe you'll use them!
